Fall is the Perfect time for a Camping Getaway

Now that we have all had a chance to relax and recharge after a hectic summer, the planning for 2012 begins. We hope you’ve seen the exciting new changes we’ve made for next year, including our brand new Peaks and Paddles Trek and Oregon Service Trek. As we update our website, we are also updating our blog. We’ve decided that along with highlighting our summer programs, we’ll also share some of our favorite camping spots and tips for spending time outdoors. If you like what you read, or have topics you’d like us to cover, please don’t hesitate to let us know!
Even though we all spend quite a bit of time camping in the summer time (as we are a summer camp!), my absolute favorite season for camping is fall. The weather has cooled down, giving way to crisp, clear autumn nights, the bugs have seemingly vanished, and the leaves have begun to change colors.
One of my favorite places to camp is Vogel State Park in North Georgia. Vogel State Park is one of Georgia’s oldest state parks and is located within the Chattahoochee National Forest. With two of the tallest mountains in Georgia near by, it’s a great place to head any time of year. Blood Mountain is close enough to hike (if you are an ambitious hiker that is!), and Brasstown Bald is just a short drive away.
Vogel boasts 233 wooded acres, a 22-acre lake, 103 tent trailer and RV campsites, and 35 rustic cottages (if camping is not necessarily your style!). During the warmer months, you can rent pedal boats or take a swim in the lake. There are a total of 17 trail miles in the park, with the Coosa Backcountry Trail linking up with the Appalachian Trail and Blood Mountain.
Other park activities include fishing, miniature golf, and geo-caching. Geo-caching is an activity that we have started including on our treks. It can be described as a “high-tech” treasure hunt where you search for caches (boxes or capsules) hidden all over the world. There are a total of 46 caches hidden in 43 Georgia State Parks, with 2 hidden at Vogel State Park. Geo-caching is a great activity to get the whole family outdoors. All in all, Vogel State Park is a great place to bring the family for a day or an entire weekend. If you do not have the time to make the trip to Vogel, then do something outside locally. Go to a local park, plan a picnic, or like me, build a campfire in your own backyard. Here at Adamah Adventures, we “forget the box and just think outside,” and we think you should too. Happy Fall everyone!
